kurelek

January 19, 2010

i found out about william kurelek through an old library book at a yard sale a few years ago called ‘a prairie boy’s summer’. then i found the winter version on amazon for a few dollars. his paintings reminded me of my childhood (ok, adulthood too) religiously watching ‘little house on the prairie’…thoughts of how hard ma and pa ingalls busted their asses on the farm during blizzards and windstorms. i digress…

kurelek’s story was really sad – the way his father’s disapproval of his ‘arty dreaminess’ and lack of work ethic affected him, hospitalization for emotional problems and depression – even more so paired with the bleak and harsh scenes he painted (even in his children’s books). his pictures are incredibly detailed and beautiful, and they feel really comfortingly rural canadian.
